The classic metro tile originated in the early 1900s when New York and London subways were lined with white, glossy tiles in precisely this format. The style quickly became popular in bathrooms and kitchens, dominating residential construction around the turn of the century. The term "half-tile" refers to the 7.5x15 cm format being exactly half of the then-common 15x15 cm tile.
The tile is made from white clay and hand-glazed, giving each tile smooth, fine edges and a glossy surface with subtle variations from tile to tile. This gives the wall a lively character and an authentic reference to the original metro tile, rather than an industrial, uniform finish.
Victorian Glazed is traditionally laid in a brick bond with a half-tile offset, but also works well laid vertically or in a herringbone pattern. It suits entire rooms, an accent wall, the shower, or the wall behind the kitchen counter.
